TV: Choosing the right earbuds for you

by | Mar 26, 2025 | Technology

Earbuds are not just earbuds.  And – breaking news – there are many more brands than Apple AirPods.  Some for running, some for gym workouts, some for just walking and talking, some for swimming (yep), and even some specially made for sleeping.

I break down the different types of earbuds and which ones may be right for you.  As seen on FOX 7 Austin.

Some key factors:

1. Sound Quality

Look for earbuds with balanced audio, strong bass (if you prefer it), and clear mids and highs. Features like noise cancellation or transparency mode can also enhance your listening experience.

2. Fit & Comfort

Earbuds come in different shapes and sizes. In-ear buds with multiple ear tip sizes offer a better fit, while open-ear designs provide more comfort for extended use.

3. Battery Life

If you need long-lasting earbuds, consider ones with at least 5-8 hours of playback on a single charge and an additional 20+ hours with the charging case.

4. Connectivity & Compatibility

Make sure the earbuds support Bluetooth 5.0 or higher for stable connections. Check if they work well with your device (iOS, Android, PC) and support features like multi-device pairing.

5. Noise Cancellation & Transparency Mode

Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) helps block out external noise, ideal for commuting or work. Transparency mode lets you hear your surroundings when needed.

6. Controls & Features

Touch or physical buttons allow easy control of music and calls. Additional features like voice assistants, customizable EQ settings, and app integration can enhance usability.

7. Durability & Water Resistance

For workouts or outdoor use, choose earbuds with an IP rating (e.g., IPX4 for sweat resistance, IPX7 for water resistance).

8. Price & Brand Reliability

Set a budget and compare options. Well-known brands often offer better support, warranties, and app features, but there are also great budget-friendly alternatives.
